We run the following popular Parent Education classes: Baby Talk (Baby Sign), CPR for Babies and Toddlers, Moving & Munching (4-12 months), Sleeping Patterns, Speech & Language Development, Tinies to Tots, Toddler Nutrition, Toilet Training, Pregnant Again, Positive Discipline and Tantrums, Childhood Illness.

Want to do a class for FREE? Just volunteer to be 'Class helper' (open up and put out tea and biscuits etc) when enrolling.

Enrolments close the Friday prior to course date and classes will only be held with sufficient enrolments.

Baby Talk (Baby Sign)

The Baby Talk Baby Sign Language workshop introduces parents to BabyTalk Baby Sign Language: a simple, easy to use early communication tool.  Parents learn when to start signing, how to implement signing with their babies, and how to recognise when their baby has grasped the concept.  Signing with your baby is a fun experience that enhances bonding with your child and reduces frustrations and tantrums while promoting language development.

Tutor Tara Lemana is an experienced signing parent of two and has been a BabyTalk Coach for over 7 years.

CPR for Babies & Toddlers

Learn exactly what to do if a baby or child stops breathing for any reason, or chokes. Gain confidence by practising these vital skills on CPR baby manikins.  This is a popular class - book early!

Moving & Munching

Discover what your child will be doing developmentally in their first year, and get tips and tricks for introducing and continuing solids. This course is held in two sessions: Munching & Moving.

Session 1: Munching  Tuesday evening

The Munching session is taken by Jeanette and covers introducing solid foods to your baby in stages (Stage one - 6 months; Stage two - 7-8 months; and, Stage three - 8-12 months). The session covers:

  • cooking baby food
  • continuing your baby’s milk feeds
  • storing and freezing baby foods safely
  • using commercial baby foods
  • progressing towards finger foods
  • progressing to family meals. 

Session 2: Moving  - Wednesday morning

The Moving session is taken by Robi and gives information on your baby's physical development and lots of ideas to encourage your baby's movement.

Sleeping Patterns

Helpful tips for parents of babies and toddlers who have unsettled sleep patterns.  The class includes establishing realistic routines, development issues and how much sleep your child needs.  Learn how to encourage your child to sleep in the day or night.

Speech & Language Development

Children learn to communicate in different ways at different ages so it can be difficult to know what is 'normal' and when to be concerned.  This workshop will give you the opportunity to learn practical skills to help support your child's communication.

The content will include:

  • how language typically develops
  • ways to promote and develop emerging language skills
  • what to do if you have concerns about communication development
  • how to support development of speech sounds and how to respond to speech sound errors.

Tinies to Tots

Tinies to Tots is a new informative programme for parents of children aged from 10-18 months. There are two evening sessions: Tuesdays 21 & 28 February. This class is run by Lena Florance who also runs Baby & You. Tinies to Tots will cover topics including those listed below and there will be lots of opportunity for asking questions.

Toddler Nutrition

This class helps with ways to tackle the sometimes difficult task of feeding your toddler (18-36 months). It covers:

  • snack ideas
  • eating family meals
  • amounts of dairy for toddlers
  • weaning to cups
  • and there is plenty of opportunity to ask questions and learn from the experiences of other parents.

Toilet Training

This class will give you information to help you make a decision about when to start toilet training your toddler.  Learn what is required to get started and make this a satisfying experience for the whole family.

Childhood Health and Illnesses

This popular class is taken by Dr Rachel Waters – a doctor with young children herself. Learn about common and not so common childhood illnesses and learn some first aid basics. Rachel also discusses car seat safety. A great class for anyone with children under 5!

Pregnant Again

Refresh your childbirth knowledge before #2 comes.  Topics include what to expect from another pregnancy, caring for yourself, relaxation exercises, and survival techniques for coping with a new baby and a toddler, changes in family dynamics and any other topics you'd like to cover! Partners are encouraged to come along at no extra charge

Positive Discipline and Tantrums

Find out what makes your toddler tick – why they throw tantrums and effective strategies for dealing with them. Turn the “terrible twos” into the “terrific twos”.
